Known for its less-than-truckload freight services, XPO combines advanced network capabilities with top-tier technology and highly refined services, ensuring not only the smooth transportation of goods but also adherence to environmentally sound practices.
This firm's commitment to sustainability is not just a badge worn for show—it's woven deeply into its corporate structure and operational strategies. This structure not only defines the company's path forward but also solidifies its role as a leader in green logistics.
Organisational oversight, complemented by the watchful eyes of the Board of Directors and various company teams, ensures that sustainability remains at the heart of all business decisions and actions.

Pushing the Boundaries of Green Innovation
The urgent call for sustainable logistics resonates more now than ever, with projections suggesting logistics could be responsible for up to 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Within this framework, road freight is flagged as a major contributor, expected to generate over half of all global trade-related transport emissions. XPO acknowledges the challenges ahead and is proactively investing in the technology and infrastructure needed to not only meet but exceed contemporary environmental standards.
The company's investments are diversified across multiple verticals:
- The ongoing enhancement of fleet facilities and resources, continuously upgrading tractors and trailers
- Adopting cleaner fuel alternatives wherever viable
- Amplifying the use of sophisticated data and analytics to optimise operational efficiencies
- Exploring and evaluating the economic feasibility of adopting alternate vehicle technology that significantly minimises environmental impact
A Closer Look at Dr Nicholas Head
Steering these initiatives is Dr Nicholas Head, an experienced sustainability, procurement, and supply chain leader. With over 15 years of experience across various sectors, Dr Head is integral to the company, pushing forward the boundaries of what's possible in sustainable logistics.
Joining XPO in 2021, Dr Head quickly made significant strides, taking on the role of Head of Sustainability for the UK and Ireland in 2022. His academic background is nothing short of impressive, holding a doctorate in sustainable waste and resource management as well as a master’s in waste management from the University of Northampton.
Sustainability in Collaboration: The Sustainable Logistics Forum
Dr Head recently took on the role of Vice Chair at the Sustainable Logistics Forum, making an impact by supporting UK operations and logistics teams to share knowledge and collaborate on vital initiatives such as fleet decarbonisation, technological innovation, and energy efficiency efforts.
An established hub within Rutland Forums, the SLF serves as a collaborative platform for sustainability and energy practitioners from significant fleet operators, including well-known entities like Boots, John Lewis Partnership, and Tesco, allowing them to exchange insights, discuss policy impacts, and support one another in sustainable advancements.
“Decarbonising the economy and transportation in a manner that is not unduly burdensome on businesses or job creation and retention is a huge challenge that requires cross-sector collaboration as never before,” says Dr Nicholas.
He adds: “Having the opportunity to participate in the Sustainable Logistics Forum and help guide debate among industry peers can only benefit all involved, including providing substantial opportunities to identify initiatives that can drive that decarbonisation journey.”
Haydn Young, Chair of Rutland Forums & Hudle Network, comments: "I’m really thrilled for Dr Nicholas Head to take on this role within the network. Transitioning logistics to net zero is going to be a significant task and with Dr Nick’s leadership, the Sustainable Logistics Forum can put ideas into action.”
