Why NHS Supply Chain Chose GXO as Newest Logistics Partner

GXO Logistics has been confirmed as the new logistics partner for NHS Supply Chain in a US$2.5bn, 10-year contract that marks the companyâs biggest move yet into healthcare logistics.
The deal will see GXO take control of eight NHS distribution centres and a fleet of more than 300 vehicles, aiming to improve delivery of medical supplies across the UK.
Known as the worldâs largest pure-play contract logistics company, GXO Logistics is now positioning itself as a key player in global health logistics, with a growing list of international healthcare clients.
Logistics at scale for NHS and beyond
Under the agreement, GXO will take responsibility for operating the full end-to-end NHS Supply Chain logistics network, including warehousing and distribution for hospitals, GP surgeries and community healthcare providers across the country.
The fleet of more than 300 NHS vehicles will be managed directly by GXO, working out of eight strategically-positioned distribution centres.
GXOâs logistics systems are built around complex demands like those of the healthcare sector. These include full inventory transparency, emergency fulfilment options and compliance with strict safety and regulatory standards.
The company uses advanced digital tools to manage time-sensitive, high-value products â from surgical kits to diagnostic machines â while also supporting deliveries to at-home patients and remote community care providers.
âOur successful expansion in the health sector is the result of a multi-year disciplined commercial and M&A strategy to diversify into high growth verticals and geographies,â says Richard Cawston, Chief Revenue Officer at GXO.
âThis landmark agreement with the NHS in the UK will serve as a springboard to further grow our healthcare footprint in the UK, as well as in the US and Europe as more healthcare organisations and suppliers recognise the benefits of a trusted logistics partner and a tech-enabled supply chain.â
This isnât GXOâs first move in the sector, but does represent its biggest to date.
In the US, the company has signed a multi-year deal with Siemens Healthineers, a German medical technology firm. That arrangement includes the development of âMega Depotsâ to support Siemensâ Forward Stocking Networkâwarehouses built to hold inventory close to point-of-use, speeding up delivery to hospitals and labs.
Tech-led healthcare logistics
GXOâs healthcare logistics solutions focus heavily on standardisation and precision, resulting in consistent processes, clean data and reliable delivery windows.
In hospitals, this helps reduce stockouts of vital products; in homes, it means getting medical devices to patients who rely on daily treatments.
The company operates more than 1,000 facilities globally, totalling around 200 million square feet of warehouse space. With a workforce in excess of 150,000, GXO has the scale to support large-scale clients like NHS Supply Chain, but itâs the combination of this scale with technology that forms the core of its offer.
Across the UK, Europe and the US, GXOâs healthcare teams manage high-value medical SKUs, while enabling clinicians and suppliers to see exactly where stock is in real time.
The system is designed to support the needs of a sector where demand can be sudden and critical, such as during health emergencies or product recalls.
GXO says its aim is to improve consistency in care delivery by reducing waste, managing risk and making sure the right supplies reach the right people at the right time.
Global expansion with healthcare at the centre
The NHS deal follows a pattern of high-profile wins for GXO in healthcare logistics.
As well as Siemens Healthineers, its client list now includes bioMĂŠrieux, Fresenius Medical and Getinge. These are not one-off contracts, but long-term agreements that bring GXO into deeper integration with healthcare supply chains across both sides of the Atlantic.
GXO describes its model as âtech-enabledâ and focused on supporting outsourced logistics for complex sectors. Healthcare, with its regulatory requirements and the critical importance of delivery performance, fits neatly into this strategy.
For GXO, the NHS contract is both a major vote of confidence and an entry point into broader public sector health work in the UK.
