FedEx Goes for Gold with Paris 2024 Olympics Strategy
With the much-anticipated Paris Olympics and Paralympics set to begin, logistics players have been gearing up to ensure seamless operations during the upcoming period of high demand.
Among them is industry giant FedEx, which has developed a robust strategy to continue delivering the best-possible customer experience over the next few weeks.
From increased operational capacity and optimised delivery routes, to adjusted transportation plans and real-time monitoring, the company’s various teams are working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a smooth process for anyone sending parcels.
Measures implemented by FedEx include:
- Operational solutions to maintain a quality collection and delivery service
- Compliance with all safety measures put in place by French authorities while working closely with customers to provide the best possible service.
- A dedicated team whose role it is to listen to authorities and monitor the evolution of situations before and during the events to ensure compliance and secure customers' shipments.
Committed to customer service
FedEx is faced with handling a truly unique situation before, during and after the Olympics, which is being held in Paris for the first time in 100 years.
In an attempt to handle the significant congestion being anticipated across the French capital throughout July, August and into September, various urgent tactics are being deployed.
“During this exciting time for the city, we’re confident we will continue to deliver an outstanding customer experience with a robust and resilient action plan,” says Eser Sezek, Vice President of Ground Operations in France at FedEx.
“The main changes we’ll be making this summer are an increase in our operational capacity, optimisation of our services and a rigorous method of monitoring progress.
“Paris will experience greater levels of traffic and there’ll be a number of diversions in place, so we need to be agile enough to handle that situation. We’ve redesigned our delivery routes to mitigate the impact of traffic restrictions and our dedicated control tower will monitor all activities to ensure compliance.”
Increasing capacity is vital to FedEx’s success as it will allow the business to handle potential congestion and keep delivery schedules on track.
Urban micro hubs have been set up to support the flow of parcels through the FedEx network and the business is actively promoting its ‘hold at location’ option. This gives customers the flexibility to collect packages at a time that suits them, while FedEx stations are being enhanced to handle more parcels over the counter.
When it comes to the last mile, more cargo bikes are being deployed to navigate restricted areas without adding to existing traffic congestion. Couriers using these bikes will be able to reach parts of the city that would otherwise be inaccessible to larger vehicles.
“For FedEx, this period represents a marathon, not a sprint,” adds Eser. “We’ve done the training and planning and I’m excited to be able to show our customers what we can achieve.
“We’ll be closely monitoring the strategy for the duration and making any necessary adjustments. We’ve been engaged with relevant authorities to help develop our action plan, and we’ll stay in close contact with our customers to provide the best-possible service.”
- Operational plan for delivery and collection in restricted areas using cargo bikes
- Establishment of urban micro-hubs to facilitate the logistics flow
- Increased operational resources to cope with possible congestion
- Adaptation of routes to limit the impact of traffic restrictions on service
- Highlighting the “consignment at a drop-off point” option and adapting FedEx agencies to serve more customers at counters
- Identification of sensitive packages (such as pharmaceutical and heat-sensitive products) or critical packages (such as aeronautical or medical equipment), which will be treated as a priority
- Review of transport plans to take into account routes that could be affected by traffic difficulties
- Monitoring of delivery/collection/transport activities by a control tower to ensure compliance with operational plans according to restrictions related to different events. Usual business contacts will remain unchanged
- Full range of proximity points offered by a dedicated partner so that FedEx customers can choose this delivery option.
