Why DP World is at the Heart of the Vinyl Revival

Since opening in August 2023, DP World's warehouse in Bicester, UK, has quickly positioned itself at the heart of the countryâs physical music supply chain.
In fact, the logistics facility recently reached a significant milestone, handling its 10 millionth vinyl record, making it the largest hub for physical music and video distribution in the UK.
The 270,000 square foot warehouse combines manual expertise with semi-autonomous robots to maintain fast, scalable and accurate order fulfilment.
Neil Lander, Business Development Director for EMEA at DP World Logistics, says: âThe milestone shipment of Bicesterâs 10-millionth vinyl record is testament to the work of our team to help support the revival of Britianâs physical music and home entertainment sector.
"With over 80 semi-autonomous âpick robotsâ, we have built a highly-scalable and efficient operation and we are very excited to continue supporting the UKâs thriving physical music industry, especially as we approach Record Store Day on 12 April."
Transforming music distribution
DP Worldâs Bicester site runs with over 80 semi-autonomous picking robots, developed by Locus Robotics. They operate alongside human workers, taking instructions and navigating the warehouse floor independently.
As well as improving speed and efficiency while keeping error rates low, this hybrid approach helps DP World meet growing demand for physical formats like vinyl and CD.
The warehouse now handles more than 70% of all physical music distributed in the UK, alongside 35% of the countryâs home entertainment products. In its first year, the facility distributed more than 20 million individual units across product lines.
With demand rising, the Bicester hub is playing a central role in what has become known as the âvinyl revivalâ. The term refers to renewed interest in vinyl records, which now account for a large share of physical music sales globally.
The warehouse ships to major retailers such as Amazon and HMV, as well as more than 400 independent record stores across the UK.
Alongside wholesale distribution, DP World is responding to growing e-commerce sales. In 2024 alone, the site dispatched approximately two million units directly to end customers.
This direct-to-consumer fulfilment builds on traditional supply chain models and reflects broader changes in buying habits. With consumers increasingly expecting fast delivery and product availability, the integration of automation becomes even more important.
Physical formats live on
Industry partners are quick to acknowledge the role DP World plays in maintaining the supply chain for physical music.
Christopher Crellin, Chief Financial Officer at Sony Music UK, notes: "Fans love consuming music in multiple ways, especially on vinyl. DP Worldâs state-of-the-art facilities are industry-leading and play a crucial role in supporting physical formats as an integral part of an artists' career, which strengthens the music ecosystem for all."
David Sharpe, Chief Operating Officer at Universal Music UK, points to the Bicester facilityâs performance levels and impact on the market.
"DP World developed an incredibly impressive facility in record time and is now operating with near-perfect service levels," he adds. "Their quick delivery and impeccable work has been a real driving force behind the UKâs much-celebrated vinyl resurgence."
Figures from DP World show the Bicester warehouse has so far shipped a whopping 10.5 million vinyl records, 13 million CDs and eight million DVDs. The logistics powerhouse expects further growth across all categories through 2025, reflecting the enduring appeal of physical media.
Of course, DP Worldâs global infrastructure helps support these operations. Its global network spans 78 countries and supports 10% of all containerised trade worldwide.
Alongside its Bicester site, the company runs major hubs at Southampton and London Gateway, while end-to-end solutions include logistics, forwarding and European transport capabilities.
