United Airlines (US) is launching a Sustainable Supply Chain initiative as part of a wider responsibility it has put on itself to lead the industry’s understanding of and adherence to environmental concerns in aviation.

The initiative will involve an entire overview of its suppliers’ environmental considerations in an attempt to strengthen their relationships and education of the issue.

UA will look at each of its suppliers in turn and carry out wholesale evaluations on their eco programmes, basing results in relation to the risk of environmental damage within each company’s respective industry.

Following the initial investigations, UA will then endeavour to work closely with all its supply chain partners towards solutions, and further efficiency measures to enhance sustainability across its entire network.

Further down the line, UA will work towards updated targets and expectations across the entire company and its key suppliers in order to move forward on an even footing.

"We work with hundreds of suppliers so it's important for us to understand the environmental impact on our supply chain, and this new initiative allows us to be proactive," Katrina Manning, UA’s Vice President of technical procurement has been quoted as saying. "Focusing on our supply chain presents us with an opportunity to make responsible decisions to further strengthen our commitment to the environment.

Jimmy Samartzis, UA’s Managing Director of global environmental affairs and sustainability added: "We are pleased to launch this programme that demonstrates our commitment to working with key supply chain partners on environmental issues.

"We will not only incorporate environmental considerations into our purchasing decisions, but will also seek to identify opportunities to collaborate with our suppliers to improve the environmental profile of the products and services we use."
