At the Clean50 Summit in Toronto on 27 September, Freightera CEO Eric Beckwitt took home the 2019 Clean50 award for his “outstanding contribution to advance the cause of sustainability and clean capitalism in Canada over the past two years”
Freightera is a B2B website focused on finding the best deals for shipping, compiling different companies’ quotes in a manner similar to flight and hotel comparison sites.
The company’s website states, “It’s difficult for all but the largest companies to negotiate volume discounts on shipping. Freightera levels the playing field.”
“Carriers in North America need a more efficient and cost-effective way to manage their truck inventory. They want an easy way to find new customers without investing more in sales and marketing.”
“Freightera helps hundreds of carriers with these needs, letting them focus on what they do best: getting freight where it needs to go.”

According to Freightera’s website, the carrier offering the lowest price is the most fuel-efficient in 80% of cases, meaning that opting for cheaper carriers results in reduced emissions and cleaner air as a result.
“Freightera is preferentially bringing in new carriers that offer the highest quality service, the best price and lowest emissions for each lane and region, so shippers can continue to reduce emissions as they pay less and improve the bottom line in their operations.”
The firm’s press release noted that “Clean50 is one of the most important awards for corporate contribution to environmental sustainability in Canada.”
Eric Beckwitt and Zhenya Beck, founders of the company, moved their family from California to Vancouver in 2003 and found that their son’s severe asthma relented in response to the significantly cleaner air, though the firm’s press release states that the couple’s dedication to sustainability pre-dates this revelation in their son’s health.
As global freight shipping is one of the most wasteful and pollutant industries, Beckwitt and Beck wanted to transform it into a far less harmful one and focused initially on “filling empty trucks” to make the most of consumed fuel.
The Clean50 award stands as recognition of their ongoing success in working towards a greener and more sustainable industry that will benefit air quality around the world.
