Cargolux Airlines International South America has announced a return to Santiago de Chile airport with the reinstatement of its Boeing 747 freighter service, which will consist of a weekly flight, launching for the first time on 28 July 2013.

The decision to reinstate the service comes as a result of increasing demand for large capacity freighters to and from Chile, in addition to Cargolux’s continuing diversification in South America.

The company clearly sees a return to Chile as a good investment. An upsurge in the country’s consumption, aided by market-friendly policies and healthy marcroeconomic outlook is anticipated in the next five years. The latest Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) report predicts Chilean GDP growth of 5.3 percent in 2014.

The expansion sees Santiago added to Cargolux’s current South American rotation on Sundays, which includes a stop at Viracopos, in the Brazilian city of Campinas.

Cargolux has used Santiago in the past, and the company maintained good relations with local sales and services agent Pacific Feeder Services South America during their absence from Chile.

The majority of their Chilean-bound cargo is anticipated to be pharmaceuticals and machinery, while exports are expected to comprise fresh produce, seafood, wine and seeds, as well as outsize cargo such as mining equipment and generators.
