The dynamic nature of telecoms may require constant adaptation, but Mike Brooman, Director of Procurement at Community Fibre, embraces it with open arms

As is relatively customary, Mike Brooman admits he didn’t necessarily intend to pursue a career in procurement and supply chain. 

Having obtained his Master’s degree, Mike’s initial endeavours in the world of work saw him heading down his anticipated engineering and manufacturing route, where he earned a vital understanding of operational efficiency and process optimisation.

But, over time, there came a gradual shift into procurement and supply chain, enabling him to leverage his engineering background to drive tangible business results. And the rest, as they say, is history. 

Over the years, Mike has held several senior roles in supply chain and procurement within various industries including manufacturing and construction, culminating in him joining London-based full fibre broadband provider, Community Fibre, in 2020. 

“My decision to join Community Fibre was driven by the company's ambitious growth plans and its commitment to delivering high-quality, high-speed internet services to underserved communities,” says Mike.

“I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to contribute to a company that is not only innovative but also focused on making a positive impact.”

Driving innovation and change

Mike initially served as Head of Supply Chain at Community Fibre, but recently transitioned to become Director of Procurement.

In this role, he is responsible for overseeing procurement, purchasing and inventory operations, while ensuring the business has an efficient and sustainable supply chain that meets its rapidly-growing needs. 

Clearly, the dynamic nature of the telecommunications industry requires constant adaptation and improvement. Positioning himself and Community Fibre at the forefront of these developments is something Mike embraces with open arms; he relishes the opportunity to drive real change and innovation throughout the company’s supply chain.

“Working with a dedicated and talented team, we’re able to implement strategies that not only improve efficiency but also contribute to the company’s overall mission of providing reliable and accessible internet services,” he continues. 

“It’s also great to work with a group of bright, ambitious and creative people. Everyone at Community Fibre puts their best foot forward and works together. I find it really refreshing to work in such a positive environment.”

Dealing with supply chain complexities

A significant challenge facing Mike on a daily basis is managing an increasing number of supply chain complexities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

“The rapid expansion of our network and customer base demands that our supply chain is both agile and resilient,” he explains. 

“Balancing cost-efficiency with the need for rapid scaling, while also ensuring sustainability, requires careful planning and execution.”

Mike must also think globally as ongoing geopolitical, economic and climate-related disruptions pose challenges he, his team and the entire organisation must continuously navigate. 

Community Fibre took the difficult decision earlier in 2024 to pause rollout due to associated financial pressures brought about by rising costs and interest rates. 

“Instead, we chose to focus our capital on connecting customers,” Mike goes on. 

“Managing that transition is tricky, but it’s exciting as well. It requires a lot of resilience and good relationship management within our supply chain, but that’s what really shapes us as a company.”
