Marion Gross, McDonald's: Leading with Strategic Vision

Until her recent retirement, Marion Gross served as the Executive Vice President and Global Chief Supply Chain Officer at McDonald's Corporation, overseeing the company's extensive supply chain operations worldwide.
With a career spanning more than three decades at McDonald's, she was instrumental in driving strategic initiatives that ensured the efficiency, sustainability and resilience of the fast food giant's supply chain, supporting almost 40,000 restaurants globally.
Marion came in at no. 3 in Supply Chain Digitalâs recently-unveiled Top 100 Supply Chain Leaders list, demonstrating her immense standing within the industry.
Marionâs career journey
Marion's professional career began in 1986 with HAVI, one of McDonald's' key suppliers, managing transportation and logistics, environmental affairs, packaging research and development and procurement.
In 1993, she officially joined McDonald's, taking on the management of several national product categories.
Over the years, Marion held various leadership positions, including Vice President of U.S. Field and Supply Chain Services, making her accountable for executing strategic supply chain initiatives through a network of 36 distribution centres and third-party logistics providers, managing expenditures exceeding US$5.2bn annually.
In 2013, she was promoted to Senior Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer for North America, overseeing nearly US$14bn in spend covering food and beverage, equipment, packaging, premiums and distribution for more than 15,000 restaurants across the US and Canada.
Her effective leadership in this role led to her promotion in September 2022 to Executive Vice President and Global Chief Supply Chain Officer, where she led the strategic direction of McDonald's' global supply chain.

Marion gained recognition throughout her career for her strategic vision and collaborative leadership style.
She emphasised the importance of strong supplier relationships based on transparency, inclusion and trust, which she believed were critical to achieving a competitive advantage for the McDonald's system.
Under her guidance, McDonald's leveraged its scale â managing a US$50bn spend in food, packaging, logistics, toys, technology, equipment and other services â to drive safety, quality and sustainability leadership in the industry.
Her commitment to sustainability was evident through initiatives aimed at achieving responsible sourcing goals and enhancing supplier diversity.
Marion has been a steward of strong relationships between the company, its franchisees and suppliers. She fostered a collaborative environment that drives business results and innovation.
Beyond corporate responsibilities, Marion remains an active member of industry organisations and networks. She belongs to The Chicago Network, an organisation comprising of leading professional women in the Chicago area, reflecting her influence and commitment to advancing leadership and diversity within the industry.
As a woman of colour, it’s a subject near and dear to me. McDonald’s commitment to DEI is one of the reasons that I’ve been at McDonald’s for over 30 years. It’s a place where I feel included, valued and able to make a difference.
Vision for the future
Marion envisions a supply chain for McDonaldâs that is increasingly resilient, sustainable and technologically advanced.
She sees this being focused on integrating innovative solutions to enhance operational efficiencies and sustainability practices, ensuring that McDonald's' supply chain can adapt to evolving market dynamics and environmental challenges.
