Charles Hou, Group VP at J&T Express, discusses the organisation’s approach to technological integration and overcoming delivery challenges

As e-commerce continues to boom, last-mile delivery has become a critical differentiator for logistics providers.

J&T Express, a leading logistics company with significant operations across Southeast Asia and China, has positioned itself at the forefront of innovation in this crucial segment.

Clearly, operational challenges in last-mile delivery vary significantly depending on market maturity. For J&T Express, which operates across diverse geographical regions, this presents both obstacles and opportunities.

"In countries with robust logistics infrastructure, optimising processes and enhancing efficiency to reduce per-parcel costs and maximise customer value is a key priority for us," explains Group Vice President Charles Hou. “Meeting the growing demand for personalised delivery is another priority. In specific use cases, we offer drone and autonomous vehicle delivery services.”

The situation differs markedly in emerging markets, where J&T faces more fundamental infrastructure challenges.

"In emerging markets, we encountered challenges like imprecise addressing, complex cash management for COD and operational inconsistencies that can lead to mis-sorted or lost packages," Charles reveals.

To overcome these challenges, J&T has developed market-specific solutions leveraging advanced technologies.

"We actively deploy AI for address coding and process tracking to improve delivery accuracy,” expands Charles. “Simultaneously, we continuously strengthen internal training and standardise operational procedures to boost overall delivery efficiency and precision.”

Technological innovation

J&T Express has made significant investments in technological innovation, recognising its crucial role in improving last-mile delivery operations.

The company has developed a series of proprietary solutions that address specific operational pain points.

"At J&T Express, we actively integrate new technologies, including AI and automation, into our last-mile delivery operations," Charles states. "Our proprietary global intelligent address platform leverages AI to parse addresses, standardise coding, fill in missing data and correct errors, greatly improving sorting accuracy."

Ultimately, this technology provides essential data for the company's next-generation delivery vehicles, including automated equipment like drones and autonomous vehicles, enabling optimised route planning and precise delivery.

The company's technological ecosystem extends beyond address recognition to comprehensive sorting systems.

"We've also developed an intelligent sorting system that leverages our address platform to automatically sort packages by destination, minimising manual intervention and boosting efficiency," says Charles.

"Furthermore, our self-developed machine learning cloud platform strongly supports these AI technologies, accelerating model training and deployment to enable intelligent upgrades across our last-mile delivery network."

Integrating sustainability

Environmental concerns have assumed heightened importance in logistics – and J&T is taking proactive steps to reduce its ecological footprint.

Charles believes there are multiple avenues companies can pursue to make last-mile delivery more sustainable.

"These include promoting biodegradable and recyclable packaging, encouraging customers to reuse packaging materials and minimising unnecessary secondary packaging,” continues Charles.

Beyond packaging considerations, operational optimisation plays a crucial role. This includes optimising delivery routes, maximising vehicle capacity and deploying new energy delivery vehicles to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

J&T Express has made sustainability a core component of its corporate mission.

"At J&T Express, we are committed to building a greener logistics ecosystem, actively reducing our operational carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future," summarises Charles.

Balancing speed, reliability and cost

In today's competitive market, customers expect faster deliveries without increased costs—a challenging equation for logistics providers.

J&T Express has developed a multi-faceted approach to address this challenge.

"We prioritise our customers, striving to deliver faster, more reliable last-mile delivery services to both businesses and consumers while maintaining cost-effectiveness," Charles highlights.

“We recognise that efficient logistics is essential for success in today's market."

The company implements various strategies to maintain this balance, continuously exploring and implementing innovative technologies and management practices – optimising its logistics network, increasing automation and adopting precision operations – to ensure service excellence.

Simultaneously, operational expenses are reduced, creating “mutual value for business partners and end-users”.

J&T's competitive edge

Asked about what sets J&T Express apart from other logistics providers, Charles points to three key differentiators that have contributed to the company's success.

The first is its “deep roots” in Southeast Asia (SEA) and global reach, enabling the business to hold leading positions in both SEA and China

"This extensive international experience allows us to effectively navigate diverse regional delivery demands,” Charles continues.

As discussed, technology continues to be a cornerstone of the company's strategy.

Charles once again underscores J&T’s commitment to innovation in this space and its desire to develop game-changing proprietary technologies, “pioneering these applications within the industry to enhance last-mile delivery efficiency and customer experience”.

Finally, he points to a “cohesive corporate culture” and its potential to play a significant role in maintaining service quality by emphasising customer-centricity, teamwork and efficient execution.

“This shared vision ensures the stability and quality of our last-mile delivery services at all times," adds Charles.

What next for last-mile delivery?

Casting his mind to the future, Charles anticipates a number of significant developments that will reshape last-mile delivery in the coming years.

"The next few years will bring deeper intelligence to last-mile delivery, with more precise and efficient smart sorting systems and wider adoption of autonomous delivery vehicles and drones," he predicts.

“We can also anticipate increasingly diverse customer demands, including customised and scheduled deliveries, convenient returns and environmentally-conscious options."

Crucially, J&T Express is positioning itself to capitalise on these emerging trends, as Charles explains: “We are continuously innovating our technologies and services to meet evolving market needs and deliver an even better last-mile delivery experience.”

As e-commerce continues to grow, companies like J&T Express – those able to effectively balance technology adoption, market-specific solutions, sustainability initiatives and cost management – will be well-positioned to lead the next evolution of last-mile delivery services.
