Global P&SC Awards: Hilton Wins Supply Chain Sustainability
Hilton has won the Supply Chain Sustainability Award at The Global Procurement & Supply Chain Awards.
Hilton's Supply Management (HSM) division is making significant strides in supply chain sustainability, as evidenced by their recent EcoVadis Gold Medal, placing them in the top 5% of assessed companies.
The hospitality giant is leveraging its global reach to drive sustainability across its network of over 3,000 suppliers and 17,000 customers.
HSM's approach is multi-faceted, focusing on responsible sourcing, waste reduction and innovative partnerships. It is committed to ambitious targets, including a 50% reduction in landfill waste from managed operations by 2030.
Practical steps towards this goal include the enterprise-wide shift to bulk bathroom amenities and the introduction of a Renovation Waste Diversion Guide.
In the realm of responsible sourcing, HSM has made notable progress. It has transitioned 1.4 million pounds of breakfast sausage to group-housed pork in the US and achieved 34% Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certified sustainable seafood sourcing in their Japan, Korea and Micronesia region.
HSM's commitment to diversity in procurement is equally impressive. In 2023, it saw a 47% year-on-year increase in spend with diverse suppliers, totalling US$467m. This effort earned them the top spot on Fair360's 2024 Top 50 Companies for Supplier Fairness list.
Innovation is at the forefront of HSM's strategy. It partnered with Tesla to develop the hospitality industry's largest planned electric vehicle charging network and are collaborating with Rain Bottling Company to make recyclable aluminium water bottles more accessible.
Perhaps most intriguing is HSM's creative approach to waste reduction. It has initiated a programme connecting Hilton properties with animal shelters across North America, repurposing retired terry products.
This initiative is expected to help 70,000 shelter animals while diverting over 140,000 pounds of waste from landfills.
Through these efforts, Hilton's HSM is demonstrating that supply chain sustainability can be both innovative and impactful in the hospitality sector.

The shortlisted companies included:

- Hilton
- Huel
- NHS England
- Qalara (Mesindus Ventures Limited)
Highly Commended: Huel & HH Global
In a significant move towards sustainable supply chain management, two companies have recently unveiled innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing their environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.
HH Global has introduced its Sustainable Procurement Framework (SPF), a technology-enabled programme designed to benchmark and improve suppliers' ESG credentials. Launched in May 2022, the SPF has already onboarded over 1,000 suppliers across 55 countries, representing US$1.3bn in spend.
The framework, developed in collaboration with partners such as Support the Goals and the British Standards Institute, offers a user-friendly platform that pre-populates supplier data and allows real-time ESG maturity rating updates.
Meanwhile, Huel, a nutrition company, has implemented a five-pillar sustainability strategy aligned with specific UN Sustainable Development Goals. Their approach encompasses product development, manufacturing processes, ethical sourcing, consumer engagement and corporate social responsibility.
Huel has set a carbon footprint threshold for all products, with the average Huel meal currently at 0.4kg CO2e, a 70% reduction compared to the average UK lunch.
Both companies emphasise the importance of collaboration within their supply chains. HH Global's SPF provides resources to help suppliers improve their ESG maturity at no cost, while Huel works closely with suppliers to implement regenerative agriculture practices, such as a trial of planting clover as a companion crop to oats to reduce nitrogen fertiliser use.
These initiatives demonstrate a growing trend in the procurement and supply chain sector towards more holistic and collaborative approaches to sustainability.
By focusing on supplier development and innovative sourcing strategies, these companies are not only improving their own ESG performance but also driving positive change throughout their respective industries.
