Daniel Bahia Wins Executive of the Year at Global P&SC Award
Daniel Bahia has won the Executive of the Year Award at The Global Procurement & Supply Chain Awards.
"I'm here to accept this award on behalf of Daniel Bahia, I'm extremely proud of him. He's a very inspirational leader and he's worked wonders at Anglo American. He has been there for about 12 years and brought significant transformation programmes throughout," said Deborah Bode-Harrison, Global Category & Corporate Businesses Manager at Anglo American.
Daniel Bahia, Head of Global Supply Management at Anglo American, has revolutionised procurement and supply chain practices in the mining industry. His innovative approach to partnerships has set a new benchmark for the sector, delivering substantial financial benefits whilst addressing critical environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns.
At the heart of Bahia's strategy is a series of global agreements that go beyond traditional commercial frameworks. These partnerships, unprecedented in the mining industry, include commitments from both Anglo American and its suppliers towards decarbonisation pathways. Moreover, they incorporate obligations for supply partners to contribute to the social and economic development of mining host communities.
The impact of these agreements is far-reaching. Financially, they are expected to contribute over US$1.5bn to Anglo American over the next five years, more than doubling the value pipeline in just 18 months. But perhaps more significantly, they have initiated a paradigm shift in how mining companies engage with suppliers and local communities.
Bahia's leadership has also driven internal improvements. He implemented a comprehensive Supply Chain Performance Dashboard, utilising over 45 million data points to provide insights to every team member. This initiative has fostered a culture of performance management and operational excellence previously absent in the organisation.
On the people management front, Bahia has restructured career development and talent management processes. His bi-annual talent review and succession planning workshops have created clearer career progression pathways within the supply chain function.
Despite facing significant challenges, including post-COVID disruptions and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Bahia has shown remarkable adaptability. His ability to balance immediate business priorities with long-term value creation has been crucial in navigating these turbulent times.
Bahia's work exemplifies how procurement and supply chain management can be leveraged not just for financial gain, but as a catalyst for industry-wide transformation towards more sustainable and socially responsible practices.
