There are around 12 million unused business devices gathering dust in the UK alone, according to Virgin Media O2.

Nearly 45,000 devices have been saved from becoming waste through O2 Recycle for Business.

As a whole, O2 Recycle has processed more than 3.8 million business and consumer devices since its launch in 2009.

Dana Haidan, Chief Sustainability Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “We know businesses want simple solutions to help them become more sustainable.

“That’s why Virgin Media O2 is leading the way in helping companies to reduce their waste, recycle their unwanted tech, and reuse their unwanted devices.

“Businesses can also play a vital role in supporting digital inclusion by accessing tech donation programmes, where their unused devices can be given a second life and used by someone in need, helping them to get online, access essential websites and build digital skills.”

Improving device lifecycle in supply chains

The O2 Recycle for Business initiative demonstrates a practical approach for supply chain executives aiming to reduce waste and enhance device lifecycle management.

By leveraging its reverse logistics programme, the scheme allows organisations to efficiently collect and recycle outdated devices.

This process is simplified through QR codes, facilitating postage and allowing employees, even those working remotely, to participate seamlessly.

Upon retrieval, devices undergo data wiping processes, safeguarding against data breaches.

With a staunch zero landfill policy, Virgin Media O2 ensures that devices are recycled, reused or repaired, thus minimising the environmental footprint of new electronics production and distribution, aiding businesses in lowering their Scope 3 emissions.

A contributive approach to sustainability

The implementation of Virgin Media O2's environmental, social and governance (ESG) strategy, known as the Better Connections Plan, aligns with the broader objectives of reducing the carbon footprint within the supply chain.

The plan aims for 10 million circular actions by 2025, along with ambitions to attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Successes thus far include a 56% cut in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 15% reduction in Scope 3 emissions since 2022.

The company's commitment extends to achieving zero waste operations by 2025, including ambitious goals for recycling and minimising operational waste.

These achievements are crucial for supply chains looking to mirror such sustainable practices within their own operations.

Integrating sustainable tools for businesses

Virgin Media O2 offers tools like a carbon calculator and a technology donation programme to assist businesses in their sustainability goals.

When organisations utilise the O2 Recycle for Business service, any credits earned from recycling can be used towards acquiring new devices through O2 or donated to support Virgin Media O2's charity partner, the Good Things Foundation.

This not only promotes environmental responsibility but also facilitates digital inclusion projects, particularly valuable during times when digital access is becoming increasingly essential.

Jo Bertram, Managing Director at Virgin Media O2 for Business and Wholesale

Jo Bertram, Managing Director at Virgin Media O2 for Business and Wholesale, highlights the initiative's simplicity and inclusivity: “O2 Recycle for Business provides companies with a simple way to remove unused devices cluttering their offices – and be rewarded for it (whether through trade-in value or charity donations).

"Open to businesses of all sizes whether a customer of ours or not, this initiative provides businesses with a responsible method to dispose of their e-waste, all while providing the trade-in value of the device or the opportunity to donate that to our charity partner, Good Things Foundation.”
